The challenges of 2020 had already been placed with the dismantling of Culture and the insecurity experienced in the last couple of years by the LGBTQIA+ population and other minorized groups. Added to this, the fact that the cultural sector was also the most affected by the pandemic, which meant that many festivals were canceled or postponed.
But a certainty guided us all the time: that in one way or another the 28th Mix Brasil Festival would happen on the usual date. The persistence of our team and the conviction of our mission prompted us to look for new formats that would make sense in the new scenario and prepare us for the new reality. We got here celebrating a festival almost the same size of our last year edition, albeit mostly online.
This year we search for a strength and luck message as a stimulus, to remember that this will pass and that we will come out of it all stronger. We found this power in the image of the fig sign, originally portrayed by Felippe Moraes, reproduced in the hands of several people, among them Linn da Quebrada, who does the opening show, and Marcia Pantera, icon of the drag scene honored in this edition.
Among short and feature films, against initial expectations, we received more than 320 entries, from which we selected 101 films from 24 countries. Amid the most recurring themes, the pandemic itself and the return of sex and good humor, quite rare in recent editions.
Dramática (Theater) takes a new meaning and starts to show and reward unpublished LGBTQIA+ theatrical projects, selected from the entries.
Mix Literário consolidates itself as a reference in the Brazilian LGBTQIA+ literature scene with the new Caio Fernando Abreu Award, which had more than 250 subscribers, and with the 2nd edition of the Mix Literário Award.
Mix Brasil Conference venue in its sixth edition changes its name and curatorship, following our “tradition of renewal”. Mix Talks present 6 relevant themes to our community as well as to the whole society, with super special guests. Mix Music comes with 4 great shows to be broadcast live from the Adoniran Barbosa Room at São Paulo Cultural Center (CCSP).
All of this was only possible with the renewal of the partnership between Itaú, Spcine, Sesc/SP and São Paulo City Hall, the arrival of Mercado Livre and other esteemed partners.
Even in times of coronavirus, Mix Brasil is a meeting and interactivity point.
They take place on our official website, on social networks, on YouTube channel, in MixLab shows and workshops exhibitions, and those happening on-site (following all protocols) in a few good cinema sessions at Cinesesc and stage shows by Theater in Scene and The Gong Show at the Cultural Center of Diversity.
MAY THE FIG SIGN BE WITH US.
