GENERAL RULES
ORGANIZATION
The festival is organized by the Associacao Cultural Mix Brasil (Mix Brazil
Cultural Association).
LOCATIONS AND DATES
The 16th Mix Brasil Cinema and Video Festival of Sexual Diversity will take
place in the city of Sao Paulo from the 12th to the 23rd of November, 2008,
with a tour to other cities in Brazil until mid-December. All short films must
be available for the tour, but the participation of features (fiction and documentary)
will be subjected to the approval of the producers/distributors. If you do not
wish to participate in the tour and/or wish your copy be returned immediately
after the screenings in Sao Paulo, you should notify the festival management
by September 30.
SELECTION
Selection of entries is done by a committee of people connected to the areas
of cinema, visual and performing arts, journalism, publicity and/our the LGBT
universe. This committee has the liberty to define its own criteria of evaluation
and selection, in accordance with the profile and guidelines defined by the
festival management.
PROGRAMMING
Programming is the prerogative of the festival. The selected films can enter
in any section of the festival, with the exception of films that are pre-selected
by invited curators and/our by the festival management.
VIDEO ARCHIVE
The DVD copies sent for entry will not be returned, becoming a part of the video
archive of the Associacao Cultural Mix Brasil, which is opened for visitation
by appointment only. There will be no public screenings for any purposes of
the videos in the archive. All screening requests will be forwarded to the producers/distributors
and subjected to their approval.
GONG SHOW
If your film is not selected for the festival's regular program but you wish
to participate in the Gong Show, you should advise the festival organizers upon
recieval of the notification.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL
It is not necessary to send pictures of your film at time of submission, but
it is obligatory for all selected films. Pictures sent by email should be TIFF
or JPEG format and high resolution (at least 300 dpi).
Films selected for the International Panorama should be accompanied by a photo
of the director and her/his filmography.
You are also encouraged to enclose a synopsis, production credits and press
information regarding your film or video. While traditional Press Kits (paper)
are accepted, Electronic Press Kits (on DVD) are preferable.
Press materials should arrive at the festival no later than September 15, 2008.
SUBTITLES
All selected films must send, no later than September 15, a list (in .doc format)
of dialogues in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.
Exhibition copies of films that are not in English or Portuguese must have subtitles
in English or Portuguese, unless another arrangement has been previously agreed
upon with the festival organizers.
All foreign films will be screened with electronic subtitles in Portuguese and
the festival does not make transcriptions from screeners. Therefore, a list
of dialogue is obligatory.
The festival does not provide electronic subtitling for the Brazilian Competition
Program which will be evaluated by an international jury. Therefore, the exhibition
copies of the films selected for the Brazilian Competition program must have
subtitles in English.
SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES
All 2008 entries (submissions and pre-selected films) will be handled by Without
a Box, a network for filmmakers to directly access film festivals, film buyers,
and film audiences throughout the world and to manage those relationships and
transactions from a central console. Participants must create an account at
their website (www.withoutabox.com) and submit the film by July 20 (foreign
submissions) or July 31 (Brazilian submissions).
After submitting your film at Without A Box's website you must send a preview
tape, with the tracking number given to you when submission is completed, to
the following address:

Narrative, documentary, experimental and animated films and videos (feature,
medium-length and shorts) are accepted in 35mm, 16mm, Beta NTSC and DVD.
Only 1/2" VHS or DVD will be accepted for preview screening. If your final
exhibition format is video, do not submit your master to us. We are not responsible
for any master tapes. If you are submitting DVD, please format in MPEG video
using the codec of your choice. Neither QuickTime (.mov) or Microsoft (.avi)
files are accepted. Please test consumer burned DVD on several makes and models
of players before sending it to our offices.
Preview cassettes and DVDs must be labeled with the title, running time and
contact information (including name, address and phone number).
Rough cuts and works-in-progress are eligible for submission if an exhibition
print or tape will be available by October 20, 2008. Please label the tape or
DVD "Rough Cut" and specify what is missing. Please be aware that
an updated version of your rough cut MAY NOT be able to be re-screened for submission
consideration.
SELECTED FILMS
The final list of selected films will be announced by September 20. Foreign
films may be notified before this date.
Exhibition copies (in the same format that was indicated on the entry form)
should be sent by October 29, 2008, to the address that was specified before
selection.
If the exibition copy of your film is on 35 or 16mm please ask for special instruction
before sending the print.
To avoid problems with Brazilian customs please follow the shipping instructions
given by the festival management.
If your copy is not available by the above date, you should contact the Festival
Mix Brasil by the end of September, arrange the copy's arrival on the scheduled
date, and provide contact information for the person or organization responsible
for the copy being sent.
Festival Mix Brasil only covers the freight for the return of copies to their
origin or to another festival, unless another arrangement has been previously
agreed upon with the festival organizers.
ATTENDING THE FESTIVAL
Within its budgetary limitations, the festival offers four nights stay in a
hotel as well as some meals for one representative of a film. The arrival of
this representative should be confirmed by September 30.
If you would like to extend your stay, come with an additional person, or ask
for accommodation beyond the time specified above, the festival organizers can
arrange reduced prices for your extra stay in the hotel.
The festival takes care of transportation of all invited guests to and from
the airport, provided they arrive and leave between the 12th and the 24th of
November.
Participants are responsible for Brazilian entry visas, which in some cases
must be arranged several weeks before arrival. The festival will send an invitation
letter if it is needed.
AWARDS
Films selected for the Panorama Internacional and Curta Mix Brasil sections
compete for the Silver Rabbit Award chosen by the audience in the categories
of Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary, Best Foreign Short, and Best Brazilian
Film. Films selected for the Mostra Competitiva Brasil compete for the Silver
Rabbit Award chosen by a jury comprised of cinema professionals.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
By submitting your work, you grant to Mix Brasil a nonexclusive license to use
an excerpt of your submission tape of up to two minutes in length, for promotional
purposes only, including internet and television broadcast.
